The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has advertised 11,574 teaching posts for eligible teachers to apply. Of these 1,000 are dedicated to practicing P1 teachers (TSC employed primary school teachers) with degrees to apply.
Last year TSC advertised similar posts that saw primary school teachers promoted to a higher job group as they got posting letters to teach in secondary schools. Those posted were moved from job grade B5 to job grade C2 which saw their perks enhanced.
This year TSC has announced 1,000 posts for qualified P1 graduate teachers to apply. Since January 2014 promotion of teachers which used to be automatic was stopped after TSC shelved the Schemes of Service (SOS) and adopted the Career Progression Guidelines (CPG) which officially came to effect after TSC and teachers unions agreed and signed a Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) early 2017 that led to its commencement.
Since 2014 their has been disquiet by teachers who have undergone through various studies in the hope that this will earn them promotion and improve their salaries. Most teachers have been submitting their academic papers to the Commission for approval. TSC in turn has been issuing the teachers with acknowledgement letters but without promotion as it was the norm.
However following the coming of the new Curriculum (Competency Based Curriculum – CBC) most of the workload has moved from primary schools to junior and senior secondary. This together with the announced 100% transition to high school has led to education planners to think afresh on school staffing.
The process for teachers to apply for deployment is very simple. Teachers are required to visit teachersonline.tsc.go.ke where they will be required to provide their Sir name, ID number and TSC number. Teachers are also required to confrim whether they have degree and if they have P1 certificate before logging in.

Some of the requirements are listed below.
REQUIREMENTS
To qualify for promotion and deployment to secondary school, a candidate should meet the following basic requirements:
i) Be a Kenyan citizen;
ii) Be a holder of a PI Certificate;
iii) Be a holder of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education with 2 teaching subjects;
iv) Must have attained at least C+ (Plus) mean grade at Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) or its equivalent and C+ (Plus) or it’s equivalent in the two teaching subjects;
v) Must be serving under Teachers Service Commission.
Successful candidates under this category shall be appointed at T-Scale 7, Grade C2 under the Career Progression Guidelines for Teachers and shall be deployed to secondary schools where vacancies exist.
It is said there are about 6,437 teachers in primary school who have the right qualifications to put them to high school. However there are thousands of teachers who are barred. These include teachers with diplomas and degrees in Special NeeD Education (SNE), Early Childhood Development Education (ECDE), Primary option among others.
